Presentations to Council

-        Social Science Careers (UCC 210)

o   Student development centre: new building, STD moved there

o   Central career centre (main) serves all students – career services stayed where they were

o   Centre for new students; run summer academic program; merged with career centre at western ~ Student Success Centre

o   New website:

o   Workshops (skill  enhancements), events and tip sheets (ex: resume)

o   Want to get feedback for what the students want to add

o   Main categories for career planning process:

§  Start planning: what do you want to do and what do you want to be?

§  Research: narrow down fields and how do you get there? What do you need to get there? What jobs are available?

§  Experience: getting involved in the university community, where can we find them?

§  International: study, careers

§  Meet employers: they come on campus and recruit people, network, understand what they are looking for

§  Get a job: how do you start the process?

§  How do you succeed on the job?

o   Main question: where do I start and what should I do with my life?

o   Career central: available jobs

o   Networking events with potential employers for a more casual social

-        Charity ball presentation

o   January 30th, London Convention Centre, Tickets are 25 + tax

o   Available at infosource

o   Charity selected is George Bray Hockey Association; hockey association for those with special needs; entirely volunteer based and wish to expand it

o   This year, want to expand charity ball to those groups who usually do not attend to create awareness for this charity

o   Want to start partnership initiatives; faculty councils can buy them for 25 dollars and save the tax; must be before December 8th!

Motions

-        N/A                 

USC Report

-        Passed a referendum, taking place in February 9th and 10th

-        Increase of 25 dollars for the renovation; 2 main purposes is for renovations and upkeep old assets

-        Will be applied next year if passed

-        Free trade chocolate in Mustang Alley: want to push these as gifts (5 dollars)

-        White ribbon campaign, going all week; for the Montreal massacre

-        Ground work for new campaign: Jennifer Francis (presentation about mental illness)

-        Going to start doing presentations in January

-        Next year will be put under Campus Issues (mental health issues commissioner)

-        The program starting in January will be called “Holding on For Hope”

Executive Reports

-        President

o   Building long lasting relationships: this year, built with the deans office, with careers and other presidents

o   Speaker (Myers) went well; creating summer job guide

o   Internship grant (5000) next semester

o   Creation of the constitution committee to create recommendations

o   Big speaker in the works; in collaboration with other faculty presidents to share resources

o   Council room: looks good, completely redesigned and it will be a work in progress for years to come

-        VP Academics

o   Great turn out for fall preview day, Kelly and the Dean appreciate the great job and say thanks

o   EPC meeting

§  MOS 1020 – no longer a first year; 2 separate courses

§  Poli Sci (Hons. Specialization)- requires 2 x3000 and 2x 4000 level courses

§  Women studies: will now host the new class of Geography of Gender

§  Anthropology: summer field school will be a recurring course;  in international

-        VP Communications

o   Social news is out and it is in front of the SSSC office: thanks to Tamara and Erin

o   Half-issue in January; nothing about departments because it will be too early on

o   Surveys for the mid-year review now online, FILL IT OUT!!!!!!!

-        VP Finance

o   311 974.74 distributed by the Levy Fund

o   Updated budget  in January; covering SOGS and everything

-        VP Student Affairs

o   Second semester: welcome back week, SSSC Social , Enviroweek, Coffeehouses, and Charity Event

o   CHECK EMAILS!! Fist week in January, welcome week 2 to promote second semester  4th-7th

o   Grand total we have raised for the semester $841.89!! HOORAY J

 Senate Report

-        N/A

New Business

-        December 6th 20th anniversary of Montreal Massacre; Dying to Make a difference between 5-10 at under the volcano, winks, and aroma; percentage of proceeds

-        Tomorrow at 1pm, memorial in the UCC

-        Jewelry sold at kiosk next week made out of Madagascar for habitat for humanity

-        Free the children 12 dollars Saturday 2PM
